The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery is a program statutorily administered by the U.S. Department of State that grants access to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States to apply for a chance to obtain a U.S. immigrant visa.
Section 203 (c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for a class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants” from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.
The main purpose of the lottery is to diversify the immigrant population in the U.S. by granting visas to individuals from underrepresented regions.
One of the basic criteria to participate is that eligible individuals need to submit an online entry within the specified registration period. Your application success depends on your ability to follow the guidelines provided by the U.S. government to ensure a valid entry. Once a Winner is selected through a random computer drawing, they can apply for a visa and, if approved, immigrate to the United States.
To avoid scams, it is essential to be aware of the official procedures and deadlines, as the DV Lottery is free to enter, and the U.S. government does not use intermediaries for the application process.
Applicants can check their status online, and those selected are notified through the Entrant Status Check.
Objectives of the Diversity Visa Lottery
The Diversity Visa (DV) lottery program, also known as the green card lottery, has several objectives. Its primary goals include promoting diversity in the immigrant population of the United States and offering individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. an opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
The program aims to enhance the cultural and ethnic diversity of the immigrant population by providing a chance for individuals from various regions to obtain a U.S. visa and contribute to the nation’s rich tapestry of backgrounds and experiences.

DEPARTMENT OF STATE PROCESSING OF ENTRIES
1. The DOS will send an electronic confirmation notice of receipt of a completed entry form to all applicant who have successfully submitted their entry.
2. The selection process will be done randomly by a computer from among qualified entries.
3. Frequently check on the DOS website via the Entry status check to ascertain wether you have been selected to participate in the lottery on or after May 4, 2024 through September 30,2025. This is available to those who have submitted their entries.
The DOS uses the Entry Status Check as the ONLY condition in which entrants will be notified of their selection.
The DOS usually normally notifies approximately 100,000 applicant’s that they have been selected through the DV lottery program. If you receive a correspondence or email regarding your qualifications, just know it is not coming from the DOS.
However, the DOS will make available annually only 55,000 “green cards” to be rewarded to those who met the criteria from different eligible countries. The DV 2025 Lottery program green cards will be issued between October 1, 2024 and September 30, 2025. However, considering the number of applicants are more than the available green cards annually, a registered applicant who have been favoured to receive the DV lottery program should act fast after being notified. Delay action can result to the denial of the DV lottery. The DOS has stated that random selection in the lottery process does NOT guarantee that an applicant will receive a “green card.”
